NH fitness center birthday celebration means gift giving, not getting

DOVER — Planet Fitness celebrated its 25 years with a grand reopening of its very first gym Wednesday, but in a birthday celebration twist, the gym was the one giving a gift.

Planet Fitness, which was founded in Dover in 1992, handed $25,000 to the Dover High School Building Fund at its own party Wednesday morning.

"It's just incredible," said Dover's deputy mayor Bob Carrier at the event. "This is a stepping stone for the rest of the community to step up and say geez, we can help out also."

The Planet Fitness club, at 898 Central Ave. in Dover, just renovated its 23,000-square-foot club with 53 new treadmills and elliptical machines, along with a designated PF360 room with additional space for functional equipment exercises.

There is also a new Black Card Spa area with updated lounge and privacy rooms, refreshed locker rooms a new front desk area.

According to the company, Planet Fitness has approximately 10 million members and more than 1,400 stores in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Dominican Republic as of June.

The $87.5 million high school project will get $13.5 million in state funding, with more coming from community partners providing their own donations.

"It's just incredible," said Dover's deputy mayor Bob Carrier at the event. "This is a stepping stone for the rest of the community to step up and say, 'geez, we can help out also.'"

"We are so excited and thank you so much," Carrier said. "This money will be put to incredible use."
